The weekend didn’t just have people coming and going, we also sold all the quail and another of the ducks, leaving us with only 2 males and 8 females. Having the double benefit of providing a little extra cash and fewer mouths to feed.

New quail penNovember 23rd, 2009 by HeidiI was feeling very unhappy with our quail accommodations, they were not big enough for the number of adult birds we have, or at least they weren’t big enough as far as I am concerned – I don’t really care much for what the agricultural industry considers is adequate space for livestock. Our friend awoke this morning to discover that 6 of the 9 had hatched! We will have to wait and see what happens with the other 3. But even if they don’t hatch, 6 chicks isn’t bad considering the temperatures the barn was reaching when the eggs were being laid. Even with me checking the barn repeatedly during the day we had some freeze solid (not the ones we passed on for hatching of course)! Blue Eggs!January 28th, 2009 by HeidiYou may have read that back on the 15th we did some re-arranging of the fowl that are currently living in the house. The chicks and quail got new bigger digs upstairs, safely shut in the pens in the spare bedroom, leaving our little bantam with the whole dog crate to herself. A quail in the hand ….January 12th, 2009 by HeidiWe had quite a busy Sunday, we began the research for what will hopefully be our next big exciting venture on the homestead, with a visit to another farm and a long chat with some very nice and helpful people! We also may, we hope, have found a new ‘partner’ for another smaller, but no less exciting venture.
