Take the good with the bad

June 6th, 2009 by Heidi

Apologies to those who look for updates on the farm, it isn’t that there hasn’t been anything happening here just that my heart was too sore to be writing.

What a weekend

March 9th, 2009 by Heidi

These days it seems that weekends disappear in a flash and by Monday I need a rest! Saturday morning we ventured out to Seedy Saturday. I was on my best behaviour as I have already ordered most of the seeds we will need, well probably more than we need, but Steve choose a couple of packets and we found some other interesting stuff, but I will save more on that for tomorrow’s post.

Sheep & Ducks

February 18th, 2009 by Heidi

Today started with a visit from the vet, there were some marks on a couple of our sheep that had us a little worried. We originally thought they were from Willow playing too rough, but she has not been allowed unsupervised with them for a while and we felt that anything she would have caused should have been healed by now.

Broody hen replacement!

February 8th, 2009 by Heidi

Well our little bantam hen who we hoped would act as a broody for us is still showing no interest. We really need to increase our flock size though so we are taking matters into our own hands!

First hatching!

February 4th, 2009 by Heidi

Well it wasn’t a hatching here, but it was the first hatching from the eggs of our Chanteclers! Three weeks ago we traded 9 eggs for a pair of quail. Our friend awoke this morning to discover that 6 of the 9 had hatched! We will have to wait and see what happens with the other 3. But even if they don’t hatch, 6 chicks isn’t bad considering the temperatures the barn was reaching when the eggs were being laid. Even with me checking the barn repeatedly during the day we had some freeze solid (not the ones we passed on for hatching of course)!

One night only!

January 17th, 2009 by Heidi

Thursday evening Maggie moved on to her another foster home. She was just making a short stop here. But we were at 1 foster dog for one night only! As James came back to us on Friday, sadly it didn’t work out with his new family.

Chick Chick, Chick Chick Chicken

January 7th, 2009 by Heidi

I figure its about time for an update on the Bantam hen and her brood, the ones that I am currently raising in a dog crate in my office, and what better way to do that than with some photos!

Population fluctuation & Aspen sightings

November 29th, 2008 by Heidi

What an eventful day, since we got up this morning we have moved 102 bales of hay, reduced the chicken population by 5 roosters, won a race for a cat climber for George’s place and had two separate sightings of Aspen!

Egg hunting

November 26th, 2008 by Heidi

If you have been reading you will probably know that last Thursday we got our first egg, closely followed by a second on Saturday, then nothing. We added Boven Nera’s on Tuesday who were giving us 2 eggs each day. But nothing more from the Chantecler’s.
