Chickens -2 +30!

June 28th, 2010 by Heidi

Since we moved we have lost both our roosters, one simply disappeared, we assume he met something fiercer than him, then last week the remaining rooster, one of the original ‘John Waynes’, seemed hurt.

Fluff ‘n’ feathers

June 15th, 2009 by Heidi

Friday afternoon I started hearing peeping from the next bantam hen sitting on a nest. By the time Steve got home we had one fluffy little chick and one who was getting close to dried off and fluffy. By Saturday we had three lovely little chicks.

The mystery of the bantam eggs!

April 18th, 2009 by Heidi

We were not really sure what was happening to the bantam hens eggs, then I found a half eaten egg on the floor, and by the time Steve got home from work it was entirely gone. So the bantam hen has been moved into a separate crate of her own, and she has since laid us a couple of little blue eggs. We are leaving her eggs alone in the hopes she will soon get broody.

Broody hen replacement!

February 8th, 2009 by Heidi

Well our little bantam hen who we hoped would act as a broody for us is still showing no interest. We really need to increase our flock size though so we are taking matters into our own hands!

First hatching!

February 4th, 2009 by Heidi

Well it wasn’t a hatching here, but it was the first hatching from the eggs of our Chanteclers! Three weeks ago we traded 9 eggs for a pair of quail. Our friend awoke this morning to discover that 6 of the 9 had hatched! We will have to wait and see what happens with the other 3. But even if they don’t hatch, 6 chicks isn’t bad considering the temperatures the barn was reaching when the eggs were being laid. Even with me checking the barn repeatedly during the day we had some freeze solid (not the ones we passed on for hatching of course)!

Blue Eggs!

January 28th, 2009 by Heidi

You may have read that back on the 15th we did some re-arranging of the fowl that are currently living in the house. The chicks and quail got new bigger digs upstairs, safely shut in the pens in the spare bedroom, leaving our little bantam with the whole dog crate to herself.

Chick Chick, Chick Chick Chicken

January 7th, 2009 by Heidi

I figure its about time for an update on the Bantam hen and her brood, the ones that I am currently raising in a dog crate in my office, and what better way to do that than with some photos!
