Bee hive activity

March 10th, 2010 by Heidi

The weather has been so beautiful that you can’t help but want to be outside. On the weekend we took a look around the farm, enjoying the warm sunshine, and the greenery starting to show through.

Vegetable garden planning

March 5th, 2010 by Heidi

I am excited, although a little confused by how it is March already! But still excited, the snow is receding, I can see patches of grass. The chickens and sheep are starting to set foot outside their barns. The ducks are making it all the way up the path to the house!

Feeding Time!

March 3rd, 2010 by Heidi

With Lynn getting sick we discovered that the hay this year was not nearly up to the quality of last year. Last year our sheep happily spent the winter eating nothing but hay with no ill effects. This year, not so much!

Time off!

February 21st, 2010 by Heidi

This week has been nice as Steve has had a few days off to help me get myself back together. It has really helped to have him here, especially with the dogs, and we have had a lot of fun running around the field with the dogs.

Coffee & Chaff!

February 19th, 2010 by Heidi

A little while back I came across this article from Mother Earth News about using coffee chaff as litter for chicken coops, and I loved the idea. It is a form of upcycling, and even better tends to be free!

Recycled shelves make for a Winter Hay Feeder

February 10th, 2010 by Steve

This past weekend we had planned for a bit of “time off” and a bit of work. Unfortunately the “time off” was not as planned as we spent most of the weekend looking after Lynn.

February 8th, 2010 by Heidi

We had big plans for this weekend just past; a while back I happened upon information that there are free nature program’s being run in Gatineau Park and I just loved the sound of ‘Animal Tracking on Snowshoes’. Where did it go?

January 31st, 2010 by Heidi

Where did January go? I am really not sure how it is already the last day in January. Now don’t get me wrong, the closer we get to Spring the more excited I get thinking about the lambs and my vegetable garden. But with the speed at which this month passed I am not going to be ready!

Lamb

January 22nd, 2010 by Heidi

Towards the end of December we took our first ‘lambs’ to be processed. Two of them were in fact what is known as ‘long yearlings’ or hoggets (between 1 & 2 years old). We had waited as Shetland sheep are so small that it can be better to let them gain a little more size. The third was a lamb from this year, but whereas we would have liked to wait he was already a very good size and one of his horns would have proved fatal.

A home for Spirit

January 20th, 2010 by Heidi

We have come to the very sad realization that the best option for our dogs is to find a new home for Spirit. This is pretty much the last thing we wanted, we wanted to be able to make everything work and not have to put her through another change. But as the song goes “you can’t always get what you wa-ant”!

Sunday roundup

January 17th, 2010 by Heidi

It struck me that it might be a good idea to have a weekly round up post on a Sunday, some days there are simply too many things to write about, and sometimes the things I want to share don’t need a post all to themselves. These things aren’t less important than the normal posts, in fact some of todays is more important than the ‘regular scheduled programming’, it’s just that during the week I have a task list I work to even if sometimes the world rearranges my plans!
