See the wood for the trees!

November 11th, 2010 by Heidi

Last week we squeezed in a trip to Montreal to pick up our latest order from the Green Barn Nursery.

Warm toes!

November 6th, 2010 by Heidi

There had obviously once been a wood stove, well in fact more than one, here. But they had been removed sometime in the past and replaced with electric baseboards and a gas furnace. Neither of which thrills me from an eco-friendly point of view and I hate bills, who doesn’t. With 120 acres that is mostly forest I don’t really see why we would pay someone else for fuel to keep us warm!

Lino out, lino in!

November 4th, 2010 by Heidi

Much work was needed throughout the house on the flooring as there was carpet everywhere, with the size of our furry family, carpet means that a number of our friends and family can’t visit. That and we would have to get a real vacuum cleaner and use it about every 5 minutes!

I have often been told by friends who raise sheep that I should get rid of the thistles in our fields. While it is true that thistles get caught up in the fleece and are a real pain to remove, we prefer to try to live alongside nature rather than ‘against’ it.

A delightfully fruity day!

June 17th, 2010 by Heidi

As I might have mentioned before I love fruit trees and for my birthday Steve got me a lovely Meyer lemon tree from the Green Barn Nursery. Well yesterday we went on an adventure to Montreal and returned with amongst other things 6 fruit trees!

The Meatrix

June 11th, 2010 by Heidi

Take the red pill and watch the critically-acclaimed, award-winning first episode of The Meatrix Trilogy. Join Leo, the young pig who wonders if he is “the one”, Chickity, the feathered family farm defender, and Moopheus, the trench-coat-clad cow with a passion for green pastures …..

Water Hour

June 10th, 2010 by Heidi

Tomorrow, Friday 11th June 2010, 8pm marks the start of the first annual Water Hour.

We are blessed to have a beautiful piece of land surrounded by lakes, creeks and marshes, but that doesn’t mean we should be taking our water supply for granted.

Happy Earth Day!

April 22nd, 2010 by Heidi

Things are a little hectic around here, as we frantically try to get packed and organised. Today we went to the lawyer and got all the paperwork signed! I am trying to convince the sheep that Earth day would be a most appropriate day to have lambs! Plus I am terrified of the idea of transporting them when they are so close! Wish us luck!

And so it begins …

I found this lovely harvesting basket on UsedOttawa and look what I found to harvest with it!

Energy Audit Results

April 15th, 2010 by Heidi

If you have been following along for a while you might know that last year we had a home energy audit, and a couple of weeks back we had our follow-up audit.

Earth Hour 2010

March 27th, 2010 by Heidi

This Saturday at 8:30pm people across the globe will be turning off their lights for Earth Hour. Last year we were hosting the inaugural event for Willow’s Rescue, and I must admit I seriously considered doing the same this year, well without it being inaugural, obviously!

The Go Green Expo

March 22nd, 2010 by Heidi

This weekend just past was the Go Green Expo at Lansdowne Park, so we ventured off the farm for an expotition along with Elizabeth, aka The Hilltop Fibreworker, aka co-owner of The Manotick Village Butcher, aka my new boss!
