The person with the Aylesbury ducks also happened to have Pilgrim geese, which were already in ‘the plan’.
Pilgrim geese are also listed as Critical by Rare Breeds Canada. The breed is what’s called ‘auto-sexing’ which means that unlike other breeds it is easy to tell whether you have a goose or a gander by its colour, and these colour differences are right from hatching. Adult geese – females – are mostly grey with traces of white in their faces, adult ganders – males – are mostly white with some grey on the rump.
“Pilgrims are fairly docile, quiet birds and good foragers. They are ideal for a home flock. The geese weigh 13 pounds and large ganders can reach 16 pounds.” ~ www.feathersite.com
