Puffball pizza

Having found one we started to spot puffballs all over the place, but generally just past the edible stage, then we were lucky enough to find a big one at just the right time.

Steve & a puffball
I had found a suggestion for using a slice of puffball as the base for a pizza, which we both thought was an excellent idea. Sadly the outcome wasn’t as tasty as the idea had sounded. Whether it was the way it was cooked, or perhaps the slice was too thick, but the result was kind of spongy and neither of us enjoyed the texture.

I also wonder if there wasn’t a psychological aspect to it, with it being our first foraged mushroom that perhaps there was a subconscious worry that we had misidentified.

Sadly having been put off by our first attempt we found ourselves un-enthused and uninspired and puffballs go off very quickly. We found quite a few in our fields though that we let go to spore, so next year we will be ready, know what we are looking for, and will try again.

I love to know what you think so please rate my post or leave me a comment. If you really liked this post maybe you would consider sharing it. Thank you.

  1. I was thinking of making a lot of soup with mine but I ran out of time. Instead I just watched it go to spore. fascinating.
