A change of direction

Up until recently I have always been working in the IT / high tech area.

Earlier this year I managed to get myself as close to a breakdown as you could without actually having one. I was putting everything I could into a job that just left me completely drained and there was just nothing left for my home or me. I was spiralling out of control.

I was having to put more into my work to keep going, that lead to me being more tired at home, which lead to it’s own problems. Everything was becoming a chore; there was just no enjoyment in anything, I was shutting down. I took what (at the time) was a difficult choice; I needed some time away from the office.

During my time away I managed to find a little balance in my life – it took a lot to get me going in the mornings and I could lose hours doing nothing. While I was out checking the fences I found that I would just take time out to sit down with the sheep and watch them for a while – this was the time out I needed.

At the same time our friends were in the midst of opening a new venture. I took some time out to help them anyway I could; during this time we realized that maybe I should be looking at a change of direction. It took a huge leap (well a small step) to leave a form of job I had performed in one way or another for 25 years and become an apprentice butcher and learn how to cut meat.

Things are going well, I still have a busy life; the animals take up plenty of time, especially all of the new arrivals. There is still some fencing to do, a couple of additional shelters to be put up and a few trees to be taken down and split. But before that I have to deal with a hearth pad for the impending arrival of the wood stove.

Life is busy and I would be bored if there was not a list of things to do :-)

I love to know what you think so please rate my post or leave me a comment. If you really liked this post maybe you would consider sharing it. Thank you.
