Since we moved we have lost both our roosters, one simply disappeared, we assume he met something fiercer than him, then last week the remaining rooster, one of the original ‘John Waynes’, seemed hurt.

I made peace with him, and tried bringing him closer to the house where he could stay under cover from the day’s inclement weather, and hopefully take some time to recover, but sadly he died. Leaving us rooster-less!

Now my plan was to get some more Chanteclers of either the buff or partridge colour, but even after posting a wanted ad on UsedOttawa I have not located a source. But I did happen to read an ad from a farming friend of ours – from whom we bought our last lot of bantams – that she had bantam hens with chicks for sale again.

As we were practically driving past her house on one of our trips from old to new house we couldn’t help but stop in. The result +30! 2 hens and their assorted broods!

While we were there their donkeys escaped! It’s always a relief to know it’s not just us that happens to! But it did convince me that we need to add a miniature donkey to our farm – for practical, pasture management, reasons of course! :)

If you happen to be in the Winchester Springs area and have kids – of the human variety – on summer holidays needing something interesting to do, why not check out Vanderlaand, the barnyard zoo!

I love to know what you think so please rate my post or leave me a comment. If you really liked this post maybe you would consider sharing it. Thank you.
