After my rather unsuccessful last attempt at baking bread I kept meaning to get back and have another try but there never seems to be enough hours in the day.

Yesterday Steve decided he was making bread. Using the same recipe as I did last time, he mixed it up before he left in the morning and left it sitting in my office all day.

I was out when he got home from work, but by the time I returned he had a loaf in the oven, he ran out of time and went straight from shaping to the oven without letting it sit for 1½ hours as directed.

Home baked bread

The result – we will not be buying bread any more! Wow, it is so good. The crust is crunchy, the inside is soft. It is pretty perfect. Steve is justifiably pleased with himself and keen to try other types of bread. Oh, how will I stand it!

In the summer before our holiday we bagged and froze a good quantity of tomatoes, which is lucky given the desecration we returned to! Over the weekend we used our tomato stocks for a large batch of tomato soup. The result isn’t overly red as we had a mixed variety of colours but oh boy is it tasty. I am so looking forward to lunch today, home-made tomato soup from home-grown tomatoes with home-baked crusty bread. Doesn’t that sound like the perfect lunch?

  1. Homemade bread rocks! I have some good non-rising recipes if you want them, just let me know.

  2. Between my bread machine and home made artisan bread I haven’t bought bread in years. I occasionally buy bagels and tortilla wraps or buns but not bread. It is one of the most satisfying parts of living a simple lifestyle. I envy the frozen tomatoes and soup, my poor garden was just too wet to produce much last year.

  3. Our garden was really wet too, for the amount of tomato plants I planted our harvest was poor, but still it is a treat to be able to take them from the freezer to brighten up a chilly day.

  5. I agree! nothing beats homemade cooking and baking! After having some homemade pasta in an Italian resto, sad to say, I don’t think i can have the enthusiasm with dehydrated grocery pasta.

Dropping by from SITS. HAve a good day!

  8. Wow, it looks perfect. Would letting it set(as the recipe says) make it a soaked bread, so that it eliminates the phytic acid in the wheat?

  9. I really don’t know whether this would make this a soaked bread. As far as I can tell it it just to let it rise again before baking.

  11. The recipe we used for our last batch of tomato soup was the
    Tomato Basil Soup
    from The Prudent Homemaker.

  12. Looks good. Will try it. I love to try new recipes and thankfully my husband is willing to try anything. We haven’t found very many things that we won’t eat. We are now trying bread from the Artisan bread Book, making bread in 5 minutes a day, keeping dough in refrigerator and making when we want a loaf. So far what we have tried is very good.
