A little while back I came across this article from Mother Earth News about using coffee chaff as litter for chicken coops, and I loved the idea. It is a form of upcycling, and even better tends to be free!

Having read the article I promptly went searching to see if there are any coffee roasters in our area, which led me to Equator Coffee, they are perfect in part because they are roasting organic, fair-trade coffee, but also because of the ethics of the company.

The only problem being that they are way over the other side of the city, over an hour’s drive away, but last Thursday as we were out and about, and had other things to do in that direction, we decided to go for a visit.

Maple Latte at Equator Coffee

They have a coffee shop, and as we had just come from court we decided we deserved a treat. I had a Maple Latte and oh my was it good. We sat in very comfy chairs with the sun streaming in on us, listening to mellow music and savouring the delicious beverage. It was exactly the kind of relaxation that was required and left me pretty chilled out for the rest of the day.

There were many things left on the list for the day, so we introduced ourselves, as I had already engaged in an email conversation with them. David took the time to show us the roaster and tell us a little more about coffee, which was fascinating.

Trying not to notice the odd looks we were getting from the other customers, we left with a half-full garbage bag of coffee chaff. We are hoping to be able to collect quite a bit more next weekend, and then to figure out a way of collecting it on a regular basis.

The quail loved it! And it smells really good. Even better, once it has done its job as litter it will be an excellent addition to our compost.

As if it could get any more perfect, Equator offer a fund-raising program, which Willow’s Rescue will be taking advantage of. So if you like coffee, why not buy from us, enjoy great coffee and do some good at the same time!

I love to know what you think so please rate my post or leave me a comment. If you really liked this post maybe you would consider sharing it. Thank you.
