Saturday night we had a party to celebrate Burns night. I wanted to invite more people than I could seat around our dining room table, so I came up with the idea of a Burns night buffet!

There were 13 of us and I would say it was a very successful night. I certainly had a good time and really loved having the kitchen filled with friends.

Steve was disappointed that he had to buy a Haggis, he wanted to make it himself. But to make up for it I ‘found’ a man in a kilt to read the ‘Address to a Haggis’! Last year we had my laptop with a YouTube video on the end of the table!

Of course we also served roast beef and roast pork for those not so keen on Haggis! Then for dessert a drunken crumble I found on a ‘traditional Scottish recipes’ site, made with homegrown rhubarb from the freezer, and a traditional mincemeat pie.

Thanks to my Dad for providing the pictures of the haggis and dessert.

RECIPE

Drunken Crumble

  • 1½ lbs raw rhubarb
  • 3 fluid ounces whisky
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp Allspice
  1. Clean and chop the rhubarb into pieces and put in a 2-pint pie dish. Add the other ingredients for the filling and stir well.
  • ½ cup flour
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup oats
  • ½ cup butter
  1. Rub the butter into the flour, brown sugar and oats until the mixture resembles small breadcrumbs.
  2. Sprinkle crumble mix over rhubarb
  3. Bake 400°F for about 30 minutes or until golden brown

We also had a second crumble that was apple & berries. Which was even simpler, a couple of apples chopped up with some frozen berries, same crumble topping. I love crumble, it is so simple but so delicious.

  5. The drunken crumble looks great. I enjoyed reading about your gathering. So neat to have the guy in kilt to read. I have to say, I think I am grateful you did not provide a recipe for the haggis. LOL! Thank you for linking your post to TMTT.
