As I mentioned in last Tuesday’s post, the element in our oven put on a grand finale light show and then bowed out. I posted a distressed status update on Facebook and then went to concentrate on the long list of chores needing to be done. By lunchtime some very good friends had contacted us to say they had a spare and would like us to have it as an early Christmas present!
Saturday morning with the help of another very good friend – Lala – Steve went off to collect the oven. I stayed home as I had people coming to collect ducks and a new friend coming to see our setup. Steve returned with the oven and the friends, stashed the oven in the middle of the kitchen, and then went off to play with the Jag.
Finally done with car moving, chores and duck chasing, Steve took a look at the workings of our kitchen. The old set up was a separate built in stove top and oven, the new one being an all-in-one type that is a double blessing as the two big burners on our hob had also given up the fight. Steve figured it was as simple as finding the 240v plug socket and plugging in the new stove. Of course things are never that simple are they!
There was no plug, what he found was that both oven and hob were on ‘fuse circuit box thingies’! Aaaaagh! But we are really blessed with good and very useful friends, and Lala not only has a truck for the moving of ovens and dragging of old Jags but also a husband who is an electrician and who very kindly agreed to come and help us out.
We have been blessed in this house that the previous owner was careful, compulsive and a perfectionist, he was also a hobby-carpenter and as a result all the work he did on the house is done beautifully and very thoroughly. We found out just how thoroughly as it took us 4 hours to get the cupboard unit out!
By the time we had everything done on Sunday it was too late to be doing much more than collapsing on the sofa, so last night we finally got to roast one of our ducks in our lovely new oven!
I would share with you the details of cooking the duck, but Steve had some difficulties with using the new oven and unintentionally tried broiling the duck which took a VERY long time. He was intending to follow these instructions from the NY Times.
Still it was tasty, and rather like roast beef! I had read that Muscovy was very lean and comparable to red meat, but really it is much more like beef than chicken or turkey. We still have a couple left if you want to give it a try yourself.

Why don’t you head on over and find out what other people with less kitchen reconstruction have been up to …

Yippee, for friends! Glad you got your new oven in and working.

What a blessing! I laughed through your post – the previous owner’s careful work – and of course things are never easy! Hey, I posted on facebook that my dishwasher broke and no one offered me another, why not?
You are blessed. Thanks for sharing your week in the Twister.
