On Friday I received the newsletter from Salt Spring Seeds and it made me realize that it is probably time to start thinking and planning for the spring. Not that I am one of those winter hating people, I like snow, but I can’t help but be excited about next years growing prospects.

(UK | US)

Last night I started my ‘Veggies 2010′ spreadsheet (I know I’m a geek) and out came one of my favourite books Vegetables, Herbs and Fruit: An Illustrated Encyclopedia. I started working through one vegetable at a time – do we want to grow this? Yes, add it to the spreadsheet and check in the tub to see if we have any seeds left from this year. If there is no seed then check my favourite seed sites to see if there are any choices that jump out at me.

All the info goes into my spreadsheet, which eventually I will use to help me plan when to start seeds indoors, when to plant out and an idea of when I can expect harvest. With this I try to plan so I am not completely overwhelmed with planting or harvesting all at one time.

Alongside the GrowVeg planning tool it will help me plan out where everything will be planted this year. The GrowVeg planning tool was super useful last year, but this year will really come into its own as it will remember where vegetables were planted last year so planning with crop rotation is going to be a breeze.

The Salt Springs newsletter talked about their ‘Zero Mile Diet Seed Kit’ which contains 13 seed packets, including wheat, barley, oats, rye, flax, quinoa, amaranth, beans, peas, kale, lettuce & tomatoes. I am not sure about the kit, but I am really interested in the idea of growing grains as well as greens.

I hadn’t been following the GrowVeg blog, but when I checked it out today it turns out that they recently had a post called Grow Your Own Protein – Quinoa, I think this stuff is going to have to be on the list.

I do still have the winter garden to keep my fingers muddy ….

…. and of course today being the last day of the month makes it Garden Bloggers Death Day …..

RIP Ginger Mint
Rest in peace little Ginger Mint.

…. I didn’t realize it was possible to kill a mint I thought they were immortal or indestructible or something!

I love to know what you think so please rate my post or leave me a comment. If you really liked this post maybe you would consider sharing it. Thank you.
