Tree felling or not!

We have a beautiful tree lined driveway, but in amongst them we have a dead tree that last winter had dropped one of its branches.

Dead ash tree

With winter on its way I rashly thought that we should take down the dead tree before it fell down and damaged some of the other trees near it. So armed with Laurens’ chainsaw, Lauren herself and Mike we set about felling the dead wood.

After about 10 minutes of Lauren and I actually trying to start the chainsaw; Lauren flagged down a passing truck. To our surprise the truck turned around and pulled into the drive way. After a brief exchange of words the man started it in about 3 seconds flat! I feel sure that in some small way Lauren and I had “warmed it up”. Although in reality I don’t think we had the choke set :-) . So we were ready to fell trees. Queue lumber jack song! Well; we spent the next 15 minutes trying to cut a wedge in the tree to make sure when it fell it would fall where we wanted it to. The tree is rock hard and the 1cm cut we managed to eventually place in the trunk was (sorry IS) laughable.

Small cut in the trunk

Down but not defeated we decided to change tactics on the unsuspecting tree and swiftly moved from the trunk to some of the branches. Well, slap me with a wet fish, if even the 9 cm diameter branch wasn’t as tough to get through!

And the branch has gone

But we prevailed and are now the proud holders on one small branch of the rather large ash tree; that remains proudly standing in it’s place down the drive way. As you can see from the first picture in this post; which is as the drive looks today!

Not deterred by our abject failure to take down one tree we drove over to Laurens’ place to help her with taking a tree down. To our horror we discovered the same type of tree. We at least managed to cut a wedge in the tree but it too still stands!

  1. Hmmm, perhaps the chain needs to be sharpened?

  2. Lauren flagged down a random stranger as he drove past our drive, he turned around and came back! He then promptly, and easily started the chainsaw, and bless him, said “are you sure you know how to use this?”
He looked really concerned! What a nice guy! :)
