On Monday I received an email from a friend who needed help, she had a pair of Maremma sheepdogs as livestock guardians; until last week one when of them turned on her, ravaging her arm, and had to be euthanised.

The dogs were siblings and 5 years old, and the remaining female – Spirit – is taking the loss very hard. Our friend, after a lot of soul searching, made the very hard decision to re-home Spirit, and emailed me to ask if I knew of any Maremma or LGD rescue groups in the area, and I don’t.

I felt so bad for my friend and for Spirit that my first reaction was a need to help in anyway I could. Fortunately I am very lucky to be married to a man that understands and supports me.

So I would like to introduce Spirit to you. We will see if she fits in with Aspen, Willow and our flock. If not we will offer her a home until we can find one better suited.

For now Spirit has her own private ‘room’ while she gets settled. Willow and Aspen are quite keen to meet her, and they talk to her through the door. If anyone has any experience with introducing LGD’s any advice would be appreciated.

It’s funny because we are just in the process of changing the dogs over to raw feed, which surprisingly is cheaper as well as healthier and we were looking forward to a lower feed bill. Hey ho, what can you do!

I love to know what you think so please rate my post or leave me a comment. If you really liked this post maybe you would consider sharing it. Thank you.
