Why we raise chickens

October 30th, 2009 by Heidi

We started raising chickens as part of our goal of self-sufficiency, to save money and to have a supply of eggs and meat from birds we knew had led a good and natural life. But the happy, truly free range, natural life our chickens have is a far cry from the conditions most chickens live in.

You Capture ~ Autumn

October 29th, 2009 by Heidi
October gave a party;
The leaves by hundreds came -
The Chestnuts, Oaks, and Maples,
And leaves of every name.
The Sunshine spread a carpet,
And everything was grand,
Miss Weather led the dancing,
Professor Wind the band.
~George Cooper, “October’s Party”

Winter garden

October 19th, 2009 by Heidi

We are very lucky to have a solarium, which is just perfect for winter gardening. It is about 8ft by 12ft, the south wall is pretty much floor to ceiling windows and just to make it completely perfect, the ceiling is mostly made up of skylights.

To repair or demolish?

October 18th, 2009 by Heidi

That is the question! Perhaps I am getting a little ahead of myself! We have 4 barns, 1 was built after the Great Ice Storm of ’98 collapsed one of the older barns. The other three are Old and the subject of this post.

Super Soups!

October 16th, 2009 by Heidi

As I mentioned the other day (in Gingery Goodness) we had quite a score in the grocery store last weekend and it led to quite a bit of kitchen time.
