Nice weather for ducks!

The weather around here lately has had me wondering if perhaps the emigration was just a big dream and we are still in England and I have lost track of time and it is really October!

Today the sky was a dark grey and it poured constantly; we have had 137mm of rain already this month, not including todays deluge. The average is under 90mm for the whole month. It has also been cooler than normal, which I prefer as I don’t function well when it is really hot.

The garden is struggling, while the peas are enjoying the cool weather the tomatoes and squash would really like to see the sun. So far from an awful lot of zucchini and other assorted squash plants we have had one 5 inch zucchini! It may be that this year there will be a shortage of the rather popular zucchini brownies!

It is important to focus on the positive –

… the geese are happy …
Toulouse Goose
(no really that is a happy face)

… the piglets are as happy as pigs in …

… the ducks love it …
Muscovy ducklings

The first ducklings are almost 8 weeks old now and doing well.

Pearl & her ducklings

Pearl decided she would raise all of the ducklings that she and another duck hatched, unfortunately they escaped from their stall the other day and one died we think as a result of Willow being over friendly and another went missing. There are 14 of them, now 3 weeks old, Pearl took them for their first proper outing today.

Last Friday we were rather surprised to hear peeping and discover that Jasper had hatched 18 ducklings all on her own. Unfortunately we have lost 3, but the rest are doing well. Both Jasper & Pearl are very protective, they do a very funny foot slapping dance when we get too close to their ducklings. I will have to see if I can get a video of it.

… and Aspen is just downright unimpressed!

The bad weather meant that I could skip my garden chores for the day without any guilty feelings and get on with a solid days work on the latest website I am doing – for an actual paying customer! :)

  1. Hi Heidi

Love this post – its a shame we hadn’t noticed the chicks hatching on that Friday – the kids would have loved to have seen them.

    Take care
