Tree Pruning

Tree pruning is something we knew we needed to understand. Last year our apples trees flowered and produced some fruit. Unfortunately, none of the fruit was that big and the fruit was done, and on the ground early in the year and not when we expected – the fall.

Bird brain!

I think I have mentioned a few times my opinion on the intelligence, or lack thereof, of Starlings and how I feel about their annoying habit of flying down our chimney and getting stuck in our fireplace. Well today I discovered they have a rival in the stoopidty stakes when it comes to choosing a nest location ……

Sheep Containment

This week our sheep returned to their wandering ways. Poor Heidi has had to chase them back into one of the enclosures on more than one occasion. She had been checking on them every couple of hours or so as we were expecting lambs; Every time she went to check; some of them were where they should not have been. We discovered during this time several holes that the little darlings have discovered. Some in the fencing some under it! Following those escapades, it was deemed to be “deal with the fencing” day. In short we need to fence off part of the main field to stop our sheep from wanting to check if the grass is greener on the other side and make some repairs.

Direct planting & lamb update

Today saw the beginning of direct planting, the average last frost date for here is 6th May, and according to my research these crops prefer the cooler weather and so can be started in the couple of weeks prior to the last frost.
