Planting Frenzy

April 28th, 2009 by Heidi

I have been meaning to post this for a while and now we are getting dangerously close to planting outside and I still haven’t told you about all the planting inside that has been going on!

A day in the kitchen

April 26th, 2009 by Heidi

We always check the reduced shelf when we visit the grocery store, mostly for the chance to find a ‘bargain’ but also because it makes me feel good to know that the item, especially with fresh produce, will be put to good use rather than tossed away. Anyway on our last expedition we came home with buttermilk and carrots, so today my challenge was to turn these into storable goodness.

A beautiful day on the farm

So yesterday evening we all chilled out ….

A day on the farm – an update

April 24th, 2009 by Heidi

Just a quick update for those who have asked –

Willow (the cat) is doing fine. She is the same as always, looking for a fuss, enjoying her food.

MJ did not return from her home visit last night. It went well so she stayed for a trial placement, I was told – “MJ was on the couch with two new doggie friends watching TV when we left her!”

This morning we opened the barn to find that Arya didn’t make it through the night. The surviving lamb and Peony seem to be doing well.

This morning Steve is on a course about composting, so he will be home at lunchtime. He spoke to the animals, and asked them all to be on their best behaviour.

A day on the farm

April 23rd, 2009 by Heidi

Isn’t Spring supposed to be about joy and new life! Well we are not having a good week, and today has been especially difficult. This post should probably come with a warning, it is an honest account of the harder side of farming, rescue & life.

New arrivals!

April 21st, 2009 by Heidi

I was working on a post for today about all the planting that has been going on in our solarium, and to show you some pictures of the lovely seedlings that are slowly filling the room. But around here you can never be sure what will happen next, and generally me planning on anything results in one of our animals feeling the need to change the plans!

Tomato Soup

April 20th, 2009 by Heidi

So we have been eating a lot of soup lately as we have stopped going to the grocery store very often and pickings are a little thin after the winter. One of my favourite’s has always been cream of tomato, and I recently discovered that adding cheese curds adds protein and is very tasty! Now both Steve and my Dad think this is very odd, but isn’t cheese and tomato a standard combination? I would like to know what you all think?

What a weekend!

April 19th, 2009 by Heidi

Steve had Friday off so we could get a good start at our spring preparation. It has been a very busy weekend, but I think that we can both sit back and give ourselves a pat on the back.

The mystery of the bantam eggs!

April 18th, 2009 by Heidi

We were not really sure what was happening to the bantam hens eggs, then I found a half eaten egg on the floor, and by the time Steve got home from work it was entirely gone. So the bantam hen has been moved into a separate crate of her own, and she has since laid us a couple of little blue eggs. We are leaving her eggs alone in the hopes she will soon get broody.

Take the good with the bad

April 13th, 2009 by Steve

It has been a few days since our last post and a lot has certainly happened in that time. Some happy, some very sad.
