Still only one broken free ….

First Chick

First chick

We moved him out of the incubator and under a heat lamp in a brooder box. We can still hear chirping coming from the incubator so we know there is at least one more in there trying to join us.

We put 40 eggs in but we have had quite a bit of trouble keeping the temperature stable so are not predicting a very high hatch rate. Please keep your fingers crossed.

Update (8:40pm): I am sorry to have to report that he/she just died.

I love to know what you think so please rate my post or leave me a comment. If you really liked this post maybe you would consider sharing it. Thank you.

  1. You mean the one that just hatched (pictured) just died? How sad… poor little thing.
Good Luck with the rest of them! My fingers are crossed that there will be more! :)

  2. Heidi,
I mentioned to Steve when he picked up the incubator that you are supposed to leave the chick alone for the first 12-24 hrs. They don’t need food or water for up to 48hrs, and will lose body heat extremely fast if they haven’t dried out and ‘fluffed’!

I am sorry to hear the first one took a leave of absence. How is the rest of the eggs doing today?
