Aspen progress report

We are making progress and I think we need to lay thanks for that firmly at Zeus and especially Winnie’s door. With maybe a little help from Willow and Rescue Remedy thrown in.

Aspen - our Maremma sheepdog

Saturday when we first brought him home, having either of us anywhere near him caused him to pancake, the leash caused him to pancake. He was a trembling, terrified shell of a dog. Then we introduced him to Zeus and Winnie and we saw the first stirrings of the dog he really is.

We tried to take him for a walk and managed just about to get him moving but it was really stop start. He would take a few steps then pancake, 5 minutes of coxing might get him up and another few steps. We actually managed to start making progress but then he stopped and we couldn’t get him back up. It took a looooong time to get back home, and probably only did because we discovered that Winnie could be used as the proverbial ‘carrot’! If she is close by his side he is more willing to risk trusting us.

Aspen - our Maremma sheepdog

Sunday we spent the day with the dogs. Just being close. Today walking was not nearly as hard, we got all the way to the top of the drive and back without him pancaking once! He has willingly come to both of us and this afternoon he licked my knee! We still need Winnie on the leash with him for him to walk. He hasn’t quite been able to bring himself to take a treat from my hand, but the last one I offered he licked twice and then ate when I put it on the floor for him.

We have taken him out to see Willow, we shut up all the livestock and with all doors securely closed let them both loose to play. Willow thinks he is the “best thing since sliced bread” or should that be the “best thing since liver treats”! Aspen seems as interested in her – it is so nice to see him with his tail up and wagging.

Right now he is lying in the middle of the living room looking quite calm.

I love to know what you think so please rate my post or leave me a comment. If you really liked this post maybe you would consider sharing it. Thank you.

  1. Hey Heidi!

Congrats to you!! Great progress— keep up the great work!

He does look a bit like a Samoyed— so cute– he looks happy in one of those pics.

Time and patience will win out. He knows you both have good energy. How did he like having Oliver hang out with him?

    Good LUCK!
