George’s Place

We have a large basement room that was partially finished that is about 25ftx9ft, originally I had suggested to Steve that we could turn it into an English pub, with a bar and a dart board. Then we lost George. We both needed to do something and then it struck me that the room would be far more useful as a space for foster cats. As George came from a rescue it seemed to us that this would also be a rather fitting tribute to him.

I found an article about colony housing for cats in shelters as an alternative to cages and it seemed to us that this room would be just about perfect. The article states that “a typical 8′ x 10′ room would accommodate ten cats”, well our room is bigger than that. I did find another article though that stated that just because a room is larger doesn’t mean you can add more cats, it has been found that 10 really is a maximum number in a single room.  (Unfortunately now I can’t find that article!)

We have been working for a while on getting the new room ready, Steve managed to get some free carpet from a neighbour that they were throwing out, and I got another roll of carpet from a very kind person on UsedOttawa who agreed to donate it. We had some climbers and cat furniture that ours weren’t using and didn’t really need. Steve patched up a few holes that could have proved for interesting ‘in wall’ adventures and yesterday morning we were ready. George’s Place is Open.

Chappy and Alfie had been living in our spare bedroom and were the first residents. Soon joined by Jazz and Tango, 2 little kittens who had been rescued by a very kind person from what likely would have been a short and difficult life as feral cats. (We will in future be having a 10 day quarantine period before introducing new additions, but in this case we knew everyone had recently been vet checked and vaccinated. )

“So if you think you might have room in your home and your heart for a very sweet kitten in need, then check us out because we all need new homes.”

Alfie & Chappie are about 7 months old, Chappie is a very cuddly boy who really wants a nice person to curl up with. Alfie takes her time in learning to trust, but is a lovely, sweet and very playful little girl. Jazz and Tango, are about 4 months old. They are a real pair, and so we want them to stay together. He is the bolder of the two, but they are both lovely, playful little kittens.

I had meant for there to be photos to show off the room, as this post is an announcement of its opening, unfortunately what I managed to do was take a lot of pictures of the cats, and none that really show the room very well. I will try and rectify this soon!

I love to know what you think so please rate my post or leave me a comment. If you really liked this post maybe you would consider sharing it. Thank you.
