This was the post I wrote last Thursday, with a little update on the end to bring it up to date ….
Sushi (foster from FOAP)
Sushi moved onto another foster home, not because we really wanted her to, but to make sure she was getting all of the time and attention that she so desperately wants. She is now with someone who gets up at 4am and walks 5 times a day, and will be able to spend much more one on one time with her. I was very sad to see her go, I really fell for this little girl and if it wasn’t for her rather high prey drive (wanting to chase cats / chickens / ducks) I would happily have adopted her.
James (foster from BIN)
James is doing well. He is learning to keep his crate clean which is nicer for everyone. He is still pretty jumpy so I have to make sure I am always paying attention when I am out with him as he will suddenly leap in the air and come down going the other direction, and he is a strong boy! When I stand still he can’t get close enough and sits on my feet asking for a fuss.
Aspen (our fearful new Maremma)
There haven’t been any huge steps forward with Aspen, but it is still early days. I go out and sit near by for as long as I can before I start to freeze solid. Yesterday he considered talking to me. On the weekend we had a couple of friends stop by and one at a time go out to meet him, and he licked two hands! Time and Patience.
from here it is today’s update ….
Aspen took off on Friday and as yet we haven’t been able to find him. I spent much of yesterday out searching, at least Aspen has a nice big thick furry coat as it was cold today with snow showers; which was better than the rain we searched in on Saturday. It was funny though as it wasn’t snowing flakes, but tiny little perfect snowballs! I really wish I had had my camera with me.
Willow (our crazy Maremma)
Sunday we got home to discover she had killed one of our chickens. We have had incidents before, the first two times she was trying to play and the chickens survived, in fact there wasnt even any broken skin, just shock. The last time the chicken didn’t survive, but we gave her the benefit of the doubt as it had not been well and so we couldn’t be sure that she had killed it. This time she didn’t even seem sorry and she was found eating it. Sometimes I wonder why we didn’t get a donkey!
The quote of the day: “No good deed goes unpunished” – Clare Booth Luce

That is also a quote from the PHENOMENAL musical WICKED! Just thought to point that out.
We are still sending out positive energy that Aspen will come back soon. Perhaps he’s found another heard of sheep to look after?
That Willow— she’s a puppy—so there’s a certain amount of forgiving… who knows… maybe the chicken was bullying her– I know they intimidate me when I go out— Willow just took it a step further!
You should get an Old English Sheepdog! they are the size of a donkey!
Talk to you soon!

Ouch. Willow wouldn’t get off so easily in my household. Sasha and Bit are both on a strict Chickens are ‘friends’ diet
So still no luck with Aspen, eh? I haven’t had any luck finding a pound in Winchester area… You may try the feed store or Mike Deans. They have boards for lost/found/for sale and maybe someone posted!
Good luck. I will try to come tomorrow afternoon to fetch the tea and settle the bills. Let me know if you need anything.

Poor Willow is just upset at the sudden departure of her mentor. When (not if) Aspen returns, all will settle and they will run the farm. They’re just trying to toughen you up so you appreciate them all the more.
Though a donkey could be fun. ;o)
