I had been spending time every evening sitting in the room with Chloe and Alfie in the hopes they would get used to me. It generally went that I would sit on the bed reading while they hid under the bed. Steve might come in and then leave to try and convince them I had left too. I would see a head poke out, notice me and then straight back under.
Friday I decided to add Rescue Remedy to their water. I have used it for myself and so had some on hand. I have read very good things about it for animals as well and had had it recommended for use on Aspen. Either way it couldn’t hurt.
Saturday evening I went in and sat on the bed. Within 5 minutes they had, hesitantly at first, come out from under the bed. To begin with they just watched me from a distance. But eventually decided that I wasnt threatening and they were able to carry on with using the litter tray and eating their dinner. They didnt get close or ever really take their eyes off me, but progress is progress. Steve then joined us and although the door opening sent them under the bed, Alfie (the girl) soon came out again.
Since then we have tried this a few more times, we put their dinner down and then Steve leaves and I stay sat quietly reading. They will come out and eat and wander around, last night Alfie was thinking about getting on the bed with me and Chloe (he really needs a new name) just sat and watched me. If I move he swears at me, but he is getting closer and less worried by movements.
The moral of the day: “Slow and steady wins the race” – The tortoise and the hare

That’s great progress Heidi – I’m sure they will continue to come around!
Good luck on the hunt for Aspen as well!! I hope you are able to catch him!
