Population fluctuation & Aspen sightings

November 29th, 2008 by Heidi

What an eventful day, since we got up this morning we have moved 102 bales of hay, reduced the chicken population by 5 roosters, won a race for a cat climber for George’s place and had two separate sightings of Aspen!

Egg hunting

November 26th, 2008 by Heidi

If you have been reading you will probably know that last Thursday we got our first egg, closely followed by a second on Saturday, then nothing. We added Boven Nera’s on Tuesday who were giving us 2 eggs each day. But nothing more from the Chantecler’s.

Chloe and Alfie

November 24th, 2008 by Heidi

I had been spending time every evening sitting in the room with Chloe and Alfie in the hopes they would get used to me. It generally went that I would sit on the bed reading while they hid under the bed. Steve might come in and then leave to try and convince them I had left too. I would see a head poke out, notice me and then straight back under.

A quick post

November 22nd, 2008 by Heidi

Late this afternoon we got a phone call, someone had seen Aspen. We raced over and spoke to the people, they said they had seen him running across their field. We followed a side road and came to another farm with a very nice man who said that we were welcome to wander around his fields as they loved their dogs too. It was -7 and I dread to think what that worked out to with the wind chill; between that and the new moon giving us nothing to see by, we called it a night, but you know we will be out there first thing tomorrow.

Pearl and the Beverley sisters

November 20th, 2008 by Heidi

Of course as always there has been more going on here than just the chaos with the cats and dogs. You may have read the ‘suspecting fowl play’ post earlier in the month about the duck who got quite badly beaten up by the other ducks. She has come to be known as Pearl and spent two weeks living seperately from the others while she recovered. At night she would sleep in a hay lined box in a dog crate, every morning we would carry her out to a pen in the yard where she could be with the others but safe from them.

On Friday, just before Aspen went missing and everything became so chaotic, we were brought two kitty cats who had been born as strays to foster until forever families can be found. The couple who were feeding them were worried about the kittens with winter coming and had found homes for many of their siblings.

Gone to the dogs – a quick update!

November 17th, 2008 by Heidi

This was the post I wrote last Thursday, with a little update on the end to bring it up to date ….

I spent Friday in the kitchen preparing for Steve’s surprise birthday party. As it was getting dark I went out to put everyone to bed for the night and found Aspen gone! He had been cabled to a ring that was bolted to the barn, be had pulled the ring right off. He is still missing.

Thorn in his corner Thorn

We searched Friday night, but it was already dark. Steve knocked on all the neighbours doors and one said that they think he may have been in their garden as there was a large pile of dog poop and they only have little dogs. Yesterday in the pouring rain we searched again, we went to the next street down and started knocking on doors, and had a definite sighting. He was seen going south across a field at 4pm on Friday. We drove out that way and knocked on some more doors.

I had to tell Steve about his surprise party. As searching in the dark would not likely be very constructive we decided not to cancel.

Today, the forecast says snow showers, which I think is an improvement over rain, and we will be out looking again. Please send you positive thoughts to Aspen, telling him to come home.

I found treasure!

A different perspective

We recently drove to the USA to collect a Maremma sheepdog to be a companion for Willow. It was the first time I had ever been to the USA, Steve had visited the US on a trip about 25 years ago.

A day from our ‘past life’!

November 9th, 2008 by Heidi

Today we had a day off and out, a day that would have been more typical of our life before the homestead. We went to the 23rd Annual Ottawa Wine & Food Show. Now if you know me you will know that I am really not a wine drinker. But Steve does like his wine and as his birthday is coming up we decided that for his birthday treat we would go try wine.

James and Aspen (previously Thorn)

A couple of weeks ago I got an email from my contact at FOAP, she thought I would want to know about the Puppy Mill busts that had happened in Quebec. There were in fact 2 busts resulting in Montreal SPCA trying to deal with 330 dogs in desperate need. A number of local rescue groups went to Montreal to help, but FOAP were not in a position to.
