Aylesbury ducks!

I grew up in the beautiful rolling hills of Buckinghamshire, England less than half an hour from the town of Aylesbury. While looking through the Rare Breeds Canada website I discovered that Aylesbury ducks are listed as Critical – which means there are less than 100 of them.

The weekend saw some changes and some upsets in the waterfowl population. With the addition of the new ducks and the geese we were having more bickering than we liked in the barn at night and were concerned about over crowding.


Ol’ man winter Arrived!

It seems that after a summer that never really got going, Ol’ man Winter wasn’t waiting for us to have Fall either! The first snow of this winter season arrived yesterday along with the first winter storm warning. It started snowing in the afternoon and just kept going, just before 10pm our power flickered off and on 3 or 4 times and then stayed off. Steve called the power company, but with a 36 minute hold time, he hung up.

Seriously, how is it October? I really dont know what has happened to this year, five minutes ago we were moving into our new house! If anyone can tell me what happened to the summer I would be very grateful! Although I am not sure it was much of a summer here or in the UK from the sounds of things.

The point of today’s post is really just updates.


My chickens are sneezing!

No this isn’t a euphemism; my chickens started sneezing this evening. We just recently bought them a new type of food as they are of an age where they don’t need the chick grower any more, and I filled their feeder with it for the first time. I expected it to be in the sort of pellet form the previous stuff was, but it is this quite fine powder. It seemed strange but it is supposed to be a good feed so I went with it.

We have wanted to add Muscovy ducks to our little homestead since I read about their prodigious appetite for flies. Finally yesterday evening Steve collected 10 month old ducklings………
